Where were you 10 years ago today? Do you remember? I do. Vividly. A decade ago I was saying goodbye to my family, boarding an airplane, and flying to South Africa for the first time. January 6, 2006 was a ‘red-letter’ day in my life.
A whole lot can happen in 10 years…and boy has it! A bachelor’s degree earned, a teaching license obtained, applying and being appointed with two mission boards, thousands of miles traveled, countless presentations, two cars, two states lived in and numerous moves in between, flights all over the United States, three family wedding and many friends married, two and a half nephews born and 10 and a half honorary nephews and nieces born, joys experienced, frustrations waded through, incredible blessings, heartbreaking losses, support raised and creating a new home in a new country. Today, January 6, 2016, I am starting new teacher orientation at Jabulane Christian Academy. I can’t believe I’m here!
I’m settling into life here and it is starting to feel more like home to me. I’m excited to start a routine with school and really get plugged into a church. Since I have arrived, I have purchased many of the things I need for my flat – including buying and staining a dresser, opened a South African bank account, figured out my internet, applied for and picked up my TRN so I can buy a car, found and purchased a car(!), found insurance for said car, sorted out a cell phone, celebrated 2 major holidays without family and survived, and it’s only been a month! I am so thankful for the other Americans here at Bethesda who have worked very hard to help me get everything I need to get settled before school begins!
I would love for you all to continue to pray for me! Life is about to get quite busy for me as school begins. Here are some specifics.
1) Pray for a wonderful start to our school year on the 13th. Pray for the hearts of the kids I will be teaching; that they would be open and moldable, eager to hear about the Gospel.
2) Pray for my continued adjustment to life here in South Africa. I knew it would be hard and tiring, but I guess I thought maybe it wouldn’t last this long! Even going to the grocery store is tiring because you are constantly translating in your head the price of items, and trying to figure out what something is!
3) Pray for me as I begin the search for the right church. There are a number of very good churches in Pretoria to choose from. I would love to have a church to get really plugged into as soon as possible.
4) Please continue to pray for rain!
I am so thankful for the group of people in the states who are faithful to pray! Thank you for your interest and your desire to partner with me as I start my work with Bethesda Outreach! Over the last 10 years, God has proven himself to be faithful, unchanging, and consistent in love and provision. I have every confidence that the next 10 years will be no different. I am looking forward to seeing and experiencing God’s grace in the days, weeks, and years to come!
